I've come across a first this
week; gloss ceilings. Not only are they gloss but hand
painted too. Naturally I've come across a few silk or
eggshell ceilings but never gloss. Lord knows when they
were originally done but they were hiding under the ceiling
paper.
As you can imagine this isn't the greatest thing to find as
it'll need a lot more preparation to make it suitable for
emulsion, as the water based paints will not adhere to the
solvent finish. And I can only imagine at how bad it may
look without the proper care, maybe a alligator skin
effect?
So there's two options; sanding off the shine or priming
with Zinsser products. I would definitely prefer to use the
second option as I know the Zinsser is perfect for this
type of thing. The other option is to sand off the shine,
which is what I'll be doing as the project doesn't allow
for the extra material cost of using the Zinsser. Shame!
One good thing though, the ceiling paper came of with 30
seconds. That's got to be a record?
